Keeping Bugs at Bay in your Backyard

There’s nothing that can ruin a day or night in the backyard faster than an annoying insurgence of mosquitos or pesky flies. As much as we love our patio space and enjoying the fresh air, bugs can definitely cause you and your family to avoid that space and just stay inside.
Here are a few simple tips to help keep the bugs at bay when enjoying your backyard and patio space.

1. Standing water is your enemy
Even something as small as a kiddie pool can be a breeding ground for mosquitos. If the kids are still enjoying the pool, make sure to change the water frequently, and keep it clean. This goes for birdbaths as well. Might seem like a small amount of water to you, but for mosquitos, it’s the perfect place to procreate.

2. Keep your patio clean
Any amount of garbage, whether it’s a sticky wrapper from an afternoon snack or a couple of crumbs from lunch, can attract flies and ants. Make sure to keep your patio tables wiped down and sweep up any food debris after enjoying a meal on your patio. Don’t forget to peek under furniture and clear away any spider webs, so there are no 8-legged visitors that surprise you while relaxing on your patio.

3. Picnic plans
We all love a good barbeque in the backyard but if food is left uncovered, you are sure to attract some unwelcome guests. As much as possible, make sure to keep food covered when enjoying a meal outside, to avoid attracting flies.  Try these cute food tents, available on Amazon.

4. Send out the bat signal
Bats might give you the creepy crawlies but did you know a bat eats approximately 6000 – 8000 bugs per night!? Building a bat box and installing it in one of your trees is a great natural solution to your bug problem. And remember, it’s a good thing to see bats in your backyard at night!

bugs5. Repel the natural way
You might have a few citronella candles on your patio, which is a great start and also nice to set the mood. Even better, use plants in your landscaping that naturally repel bugs. Lavender, marigold, chrysanthemum, and lemongrass are just a few plant options that are all known to discourage insects.

These 5 easy tips will help you keep the bugs at bay so you can enjoy your backyard.
