Patio Must Haves

When I think American dream, I think white picket fence. But when I look past that white picket fence, it’s not the house defines that dream, it’s the outdoor space behind that house. And it’s no different for city dwellers in apartments. We all know that its a balcony, a patio, or a backyard that we’re all striving for. So now that we have them, let’s make them the best that they can be. Here are 10 Patio Must Haves that will get you and all your friends wanting to spend all your free time outside.

1) Dining Furniture

There’s just something about eating outside that makes any meal better. Modern day outdoor furniture has come leaps and bounds from its ancestors with more options, more comfort, and more style. Create your own dining patio by getting a beautiful dining set that fits your outdoor space. Patio World has a number of stunning options.

2) Outdoor Kitchen

Maybe you’re a traditional charcoal guy, or perhaps you like the ease of a quick start propane grill. Maybe you’re into smoking, or perhaps you’re intrigued by the technology of infrared cooking. No matter what your preference, no patio is complete without some sort of outdoor cooking space. Much like how the kitchen is the centerpiece of a home, an outdoor cooking space should be the centerpiece of your outdoor living space. So whether you have a tiny hibachi grill or an entire outdoor kitchen, invest in what will make you happy. This is one investment you’re sure to get a return on.

3) Conversation Set

So you and your family spend a ton of time in your living room? Why not create an outdoor living room? That’s right, an outdoor couch can be the perfect way to bring the whole family outside to soak up the sun and breathe in that fresh air.

4) Fire

Humans have always had a fascination with fire. So why not make your patio more fascinating? Patio fire elements have come a long way in design and function. You can still have a traditional wood fire pit, but there are also clean burning and easy to use propane and even natural gas fireplaces, fire pits, and heaters. This will help keep you and your family outdoors later as well as keeping your patio functional through cold weather.

5) Music

You have speakers in your office, speakers in your car, speakers throughout your house, so why not get speakers in your backyard as well. Music livens up any party. It’s time to liven up your outdoor living space.

6) Color

The outdoors doesn’t have to just be brown wood, grey cement, and green grass anymore. Liven up your backyard with colorful accessories. There are so many ways to add splashes of color to your patio: a vibrant throw rug, bright cushions, colorful throw pillows, rainbow colored umbrella, even your table settings can add some fun outside.

7) Entertainment

You’ve found a reason to cook and eat outside. You’ve found a way to get comfy and cozy in your backyard. Now it’s time to worry about the entertainment. From table games like Jenga or Connect Four to lawn games like Ladder Ball, you can make your backyard the place all your friends and family want to hang out. And for the times when you truly do want to just veg out, you could always mount a TV or a projector in any covered outdoor space. Outdoor movie nights sound like a great way to impress the kids.

8) Shade

There’s only so much sun we can soak up. So if you want to keep the party outside, get the right cover for your outdoor space. Maybe you just need an umbrella. Perhaps a tent or pavilion would be better. Whatever suits your space best, shade will definitely keep you outdoors longer.

9) Plants

OK, OK, to those who have a big backyard you most likely already have this covered – or at least you think you do. But even if you have a nice green lawn surrounded by perfectly trimmed bushes and leafy trees, it doesn’t mean you can’t get some potted plants to add life to your outdoor living room or dining area. For those of you with smaller balconies or patios, plants are a great way to remind you that you are indeed outdoors. And don’t worry, you don’t have to have a green thumb, you just have to find plants that will do best in your area.

10) Drinks

If it’s hot out, you’ll want something cool and refreshing. If it’s cool out, you might want something to warm you up. So what will you need to keep the drinks flowing outside? Here are some our favorite ideas:

  • Matching pitcher and cups set: for serving anything from lemonade to margaritas
  • Sun Tea Pitcher: Who doesn’t love tea freshly brewed in the sun?
  • Ice Chest or ice bucket: If you want to be stylish go stainless steel or retro.
  • Thermos: Enjoy gazing at the stars while sharing hot coco with the kids or hot toddies with your honey.

If you can get a few of these, or if you’re lucky enough to have all 10, you’re assured to be living that American Dream right in your own backyard!
